Higher Household Income, Lower Poverty Rates

Findings from the Household Income Survey 2012 showed that the mean monthly household income for Malaysia increased 7.2% annually from RM4,025 in 2009 to RM5,000 in 2012. Household income in urban areas increased at the rate of 6.6% per annum from RM4,705 in 2009 to RM5,742 in 2012 while in rural areas, it increased by 6.4% per annum from RM2,545 in 2009 to RM3,080 in 2012.

The mean monthly household income for Bumiputera grew by 6.9% per annum from RM3,624 to RM4,457, for Chinese it increased at the rate of 8% from RM5,011 to RM6, 366 and for Indians at the rate of 9% per annum from RM3,999 to RM5,233

  

Annual Growth Rate by State

W.P. Kuala Lumpur continued to register the highest growth rate of 14.9%, while for Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan, Sabah and W.P. Labuan the increase was above the national average growth rate of 7.2%.

Incidence of Poverty by Ethnic and Strata

Throughout 2009-2012, the high increase in average household monthly income along with low inflation rate has given a significant effect to the decrease in poverty incidence. The Incidence of poverty in Malaysia decreased substantially from 3.8% in 2009 to 1.7% in 2012. The number of poor households has reduced by 52.7%, from 228,400 to 108,000 during the same period. 

Reduction in the incidence of poverty has reduced in both urban and rural areas. The incidence of poverty in urban decreased from 1.7% in 2009 to 1% in 2012, while for rural areas from 8.4% to 3.4%.

The incidence of poverty for Bumiputera showed a decrease from 5.3% in 2009 to 2.2% in 2012.The incidence of poverty for Chinese dropped from 0.6% (2009) to 0.3% (2012), while for Indians, it decreased from 2.5% (2009) to 1.8% (2012).

The incidence of poverty by state also showed a significant drop. Sabah recorded a significant reduction from 19.7% to 8.1% followed by Perlis from 6% to 1.9% and Terengganu from 4% to 1.7% for the same period. The W.P. Putrajaya achieved zero poverty status in 2012. Concurrently, the incidence of poverty in Kelantan and Kedah also continue to decrease, from 4.8% to 2.7% and 5.3% to 1.7% respectively.
