KEY FACTS

• Malaysia’s total trade in 2021 recorded a new milestone, surpassing RM2 trillion for the first time in history, with a double-digit expansion of 24.8 per cent after recording two consecutive years of negative growth.
   
• Malaysia’s exports valued at RM1,239.8 billion in 2021, increase markedly 26.0 per cent as compared to RM983.8 billion in 2020. The increase in exports was due to the higher exports by all states namely Selangor (+RM62.8 billion), Pulau Pinang (+RM49.9 billion), Johor (+RM47.9 billion), Sarawak (+RM17.6 billion), Kedah (+RM12.8 billion), W.P. Kuala Lumpur (+RM12.1 billion), Perak (+RM11.3 billion), Sabah (+RM10.4 billion), Pahang (+RM10.3 billion), Terengganu (+RM8.5 billion), Melaka (+RM7.9 billion), Negeri Sembilan (+RM3.1 billion), W.P. Labuan (+RM1.0 billion), Perlis (+RM0.2 billion) and Kelantan (+RM0.1 billion).
   
• Meanwhile, imports recorded an increase of 23.3 per cent to RM987.2 billion in 2021 as against RM800.5 billion in the previous year. The increase in imports was due to higher imports from Selangor (+RM49.8 billion), Pulau Pinang (+RM44.5 billion), Johor (+RM39.5 billion), Kedah (+RM19.4 billion), W.P. Kuala Lumpur (+RM10.2 billion), Negeri Sembilan (+RM9.8 billion), Perak (+RM9.1 billion), Sarawak (+RM4.6 billion), Pahang (+RM2.7 billion), Melaka (+RM2.6 billion), Terengganu (+RM1.2 billion), Kelantan (+RM0.6 billion) and Perlis (+RM0.1 billion). However, the value of imports decreased in Sabah by RM8.7 billion and W.P. Labuan (-RM0.9 billion).
   
• The surge in exports was in line with higher external demand by the United States (+RM33.2 billion), China (+RM32.7 billion), Singapore (+RM31.2 billion), India (+RM14.8 billion) and Viet Nam (+RM14.6 billion). In contrast, exports to Switzerland and Myanmar decreased with a value of RM0.7 billion and RM0.4 billion respectively.
   
• Meanwhile, higher imports were mainly from China (+RM56.8 billion), Singapore (+RM20.0 billion), Indonesia (+RM19.2 billion), Taiwan (+RM17.2 billion) and Japan (+RM12.1 billion). However, lower imports were recorded from Saudi Arabia (-RM3.7 billion), Bahrain (-RM2.0 billion) and Venezuela (-RM1.8 billion).
