Economic Census 2016 - Water Supply; Sewerage, Waste Management and Remediation Activities

Gross output value of Water Supply; Sewerage, waste management and remediation activities sector strengthen with an annual growth rate of 8.0 per cent to RM11.6 billion in 2015

INTRODUCTION

This publication presents statistics on the water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities sector based on information obtained from the Economic Census conducted in 2016 for reference year 2015. Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities sector encompass water collection, treatment & supply, sewerage, waste collection, waste treatment & disposal, material recovery and; remediation activities & other waste management services.

PERFORMANCE OF WATER SUPPLY; SEWERAGE, WASTE MANAGEMENT AND REMEDIATION ACTIVITIES SECTOR

In 2015, 784 establishments were operating in Water supply; sewerage, waste management and remediation activities sector compared to 601 establishments in 2010 with a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.5 per cent.

Value of gross output grew by 8.0 per cent per year to RM11.6 billion compared to RM7.8 billion in 2010. The growth was further strengthened by an increase of value added at 9.3 per cent per year to RM5.5 billion compared to RM3.5 billion in 2010.

This sector provides job opportunities to 46,806 people in 2015 as compared to 25,313 people in 2010 with a CAGR growth of 13.1 per cent per year. In line with the increase in the number of persons engaged, salaries & wages also has increased to RM1,308.3 million in 2015 compared to RM667.4 million in 2010, an increase of 14.4 per cent per year.

Water collection, treatment & supply industry group is the biggest contributor to the value of gross output at RM5,273.3 million or a contribution of 45.6 per cent from total gross output of this sector. Meanwhile, value added of this industry group was RM3,094.2 million or  56.0 per cent of the total sector value.

WOMEN-OWNED ESTABLISHMENT

In 2015, there were 53 women-owned establishments with a contribution of 6.8 per cent of this sector. Total value of gross output and value added for women-owned establishments were RM105.5 million and RM37.9 million respectively or 0.9 per cent and 0.7 per cent of the total sector value. Meanwhile, the number of persons engaged involved was 849 people with salaries & wages of RM190 million.
