Performance of Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry

This report presents statistics on petroleum and natural gas industry that includes group of extraction of crude petroleum & natural gas as well as support activities for petroleum & natural gas extraction. These statistics were compiled from the Economic Census 2016 for the reference year 2015.

In 2015, a total of 157 establishments were engaged in the petroleum and natural gas  industry as compared to 87 establishments in 2010, an increase of 12.5  per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the period 2010 to 2015. The value of gross output recorded RM120.4 billion as compared to RM105.9 billion in 2010 (CAGR: 2.6%). The total number of persons engaged increased to 41,698 persons as compared to 32,701 persons in 2010 (CAGR: 5.0%). Thus salaries & wages paid rose to RM6.7 billion from RM3.8 billion in 2010 (CAGR: 11.7%).

Value of Gross Output

The value of gross output in 2015 registered RM120.4 billion as compared to RM105.9 billion in 2010 with CAGR of 2.6 per cent.  Extraction of crude petroleum & natural gas group recorded the largest value of RM108.9 billion with the contribution of 90.4 per cent while support activities for petroleum & natural gas extraction group recorded RM11.5 billion in 2015 (9.6%).

Salaries & Wages

Salaries & wages paid by industry in 2015 increased to RM6.7 billion as compared  to RM3.8 billion in 2010 (CAGR: 11.7%) with monthly average salaries & wages of RM13,310.
