Value of Gross Output for Health and Social Work Services Registered a Strong Growth of 10.2% Annually from 2010 to 2015

INTRODUCTION

This publication presents statistics on health and social work services resulted from Economic Census undertaken in 2016 for reference year 2015. Health services encompass hospital services, maternity homes, general medical services, specialised medical services, dental services, dialysis centres, medical laboratories, acupuncture centres, herbalist and homeopathy and other human health services. Meanwhile, social work comprises of residential care, social work without accommodation and child day-care activities.

 

PERFORMANCE OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL WORK SERVICES

Findings of the census showed that there were 14,930 establishments operated in health and social work services as compared to 9,152 in 2010. During this period, the number of establishments recorded an increase of 5,778 with compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 10.3 per cent.

Value of gross output generated by these services amounted to RM16.8 billion in 2015 with a CAGR of 10.2 per cent. In tandem with value of gross output, value added was RM8.0 billion as compared to RM4.8 billion in 2010. CAGR between 2010 and 2015 was 10.9 per cent. 

These services recorded 121,088 number of persons engaged, of which 107,186 persons or 88.5 per cent were paid full-time employees. There were 11,247 persons (9.3%) working proprietors and unpaid family workers while paid part-time employees were 2,655 persons (2.2%). Meanwhile, total salaries & wages paid in 2015 stood at RM3.7 billion with a CAGR of 12.1 per cent.

 

WOMEN-OWNED ESTABLISHMENTS

In 2015, there were 4,699 women-owned establishments in health and social work services with a CAGR of 8.5 per cent. Value of gross output generated was RM2.1 billion with share of 12.5 per cent while value added recorded was RM1.1 billion (13.8%). Total number of persons engaged in women-owned establishments were 25,804 persons with salaries & wages paid amounted to RM0.5 billion.
