Income of e-commerce transactions by establishments in year 2017 recorded an annual growth rate of 6.0 per cent as compared to 2015

INTRODUCTION

This publication presents statistics on the usage of information & communication technology (ICT) and e-commerce by establishment that was compiled based on Survey on Usage of ICT and E-Commerce by Establishment and Annual Economic Survey undertaken in 2018 for reference year 2017. It comprises five main sectors which are Agriculture, Mining & quarrying, Manufacturing, Construction and Services.

 

 

USAGE OF ICT 

Survey findings showed 78.9 per cent establishment used computer (including personal computer, laptop dan tablet) as compared to 73.5 per cent in year 2015. Internet usage (encompasses internet accessible through computers and other devices such as other mobile phones) presents 73.3 per cent (2015: 61.5%). Establishment with web presence recorded 37.8 per cent (2015: 28.4%). Meanwhile, the use of social media compared to the total establishment using web presence was 53.2 per cent.

Local Area Network (LAN) recorded the highest percentage used with 55.1 per cent (2015: 54.2%) followed by Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) at 35.7 per cent and Wide Area Network (WAN) at 30.0 per cent  (2015: 26.1%).

Internet access via fixed broadband is the highest at 80.5 per cent (2015: 74.8%) followed by mobile broadband, 37.0 per cent (2015: 28.5%) and narrowband 2.4 per cent (2015: 5.5%).

 

E-COMMERCE INCOME

Income of e-commerce transactions recorded a value of  RM447.8 billion compared to RM398.2 billion in 2015 with an annual growth rate at 6.0 per cent. The main contributor was Manufacturing sector, RM287.5 billion with a share of 64.2 per cent. This was followed by the Services sector  (RM152.6 billion; 34.1%) and Mining & quarrying (RM7.0 billion; 1.6%).

Income from e-commerce transactions in Malaysia in 2017 was dominated by the domestic market with RM399.8 billion, a share of 89.3 per cent compared to the international market RM48.0 billion (10.7%). Manufacturing sector was the main contributor of domestic market with a value of RM266.1 billion. Meanwhile, Services sector recorded the highest contributor for international market RM24.6 billion.

The highest income from e-commerce transactions by types of customer was registered by Business to Business (B2B) with RM352.2 billion registering annual growth rate 4.9 per cent. This was followed by Business to Consumer (B2C) RM82.5 billion (9.5%) and Business to Government (B2G) RM13.1 billion (19.1%).

 

E-COMMERCE EXPENDITURE

Expenditure on e-commerce transactions recorded a value of RM228.8 billion as compared to RM195.1 billion in 2015 with an annual growth rate  8.3 per cent. The main contributor was the Manufacturing sector, RM179.5 billion with a share of 78.5 per cent. This was followed by the Services sector (RM46.1 billion; 20.2%) and Mining & quarrying (RM2.6 billion; 1.1%)

Expenditure from e-commerce transactions in Malaysia in 2017 is dominated by the domestic market of RM202.8 billion with a share of 88.7 per cent as compared to the international market of RM26.0 billion (11.3%). Manufacturing sector was the main contributor of domestic market with a value of RM168.0 billion. Meanwhile, Services sector recorded the highest contributor for international market with RM14.5 billion.

The highest expenditure from e-commerce transactions by type of customer was registered by B2B with RM213.1 billion registering annual growth rate of 7.9 per cent. This was followed by B2C (RM9.5 billion; 5.0%) and B2G (RM6.0 billion; 32.7%).
