INTRODUCTION

This report presents preliminary statistics on Wholesale & retail trade sector which were compiled from the Wholesale & Retail Trade Census 2019 for reference year 2018. Wholesale & retail trade sector comprises of Wholesale trade, Retail trade and Motor vehicles sub-sectors. The main statistics such as the number of establishments, total revenue, total expenditure, number of persons engaged, salaries & wages paid as well as fixed assets owned are presented in this publication.

PERFORMANCE OF WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE 2019

In 2018, the number of establishments operated in Wholesale & retail trade sector  were 468,930 as compared to 370,725 in 2013 with an annual growth rate of 4.8 per cent. 

Total  revenue  generated  was  RM1,321.7  billion  as  compared  to  RM893.2  billion  in  2013  with  an  annual  growth  rate  of  8.2 per cent. Total expenditure increased with an annual growth rate of 8.2 per cent to RM1,139.1 billion in 2018 as against to RM768.9 billion in 2013.

The number of persons engaged in this sector were 2.0 million persons in 2018 with salaries & wages paid of RM62.8 million. Number of persons engaged recorded an annual growth rate of 3.3 per cent while salaries & wages paid grew 10.0 per cent.

Value of fixed assets owned in 2018 amounted to RM134.9 billion as compared to RM80.6 billion in 2013 registering an annual growth rate of 10.8 per cent.

Selangor  continued  to  dominate  the  number  of   establishments  stood  at  94,857,  increased  6.9  per  cent  as  compared  to  2013, followed by W.P. Kuala Lumpur (71,433) and Johor (46,530). In term of total revenue, W.P. Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest  value  amounted  to  RM391.6  billion  (29.6%),   followed  by  Selangor  (RM371.7 billion; 28.1%)   and   Johor  (RM101.1 billion; 7.6%).

For the usage of ICT, 89.6 per cent or 420,380 establishments using computers in business for Wholesale & retail trade sector. A total of 391,143 establishments (83.4%) reported used internet in business. Meanwhile, 244,540 establishments (52.1%) used web presence in business.
