MENELUSURI STATISTIK SOSIAL DAN EKONOMI MALAYSIA "Evolution of Statistics in National Development"

PUTRAJAYA, JULY 10, 2020 - Today, The Department of Statistics, Malaysia (DOSM) has published a new report entitled Menelusuri Statistik Sosial dan Ekonomi Malaysia. This report presents the socioeconomic scenario of the country from 1970 to the first quarter in 2020. It provides useful information for stakeholders to view the evolution of economic and social conditions through a more holistic picture over the past 50 years.

 

Commenting on the report, Dato' Sri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin, Chief Statistician Malaysia, said “The COVID-19 pandemic fostered negative impact on social and economic where the economic market experienced a sharp decline, thus affecting the global supply chain. Malaysia is also not excluded from receiving the impact of pandemic.”

 

The recovery of the Malaysian economy has seen increasing demand for economic and social statistics by the government to facilitate efforts to mitigate the challenges in the current situation. Meanwhile, the public is also interested in knowing and understanding this crisis and help for the matter of survival.

 

Thus, to meet the new norm of statistical requirements, DOSM as the producer of national statistics takes the initiative to produce this report that provides economic and social evolution as input to accelerate strategic policy planning to address the social and economic crisis effectively.

 

The performance of the Malaysian economy has undergone significant evolution since the 1970’s, from the agricultural-based economy to the manufacturing-based and service-based economy. The transformation has brought Malaysia from low-income nationto an economy that target of high-income country status. The Malaysian economy has recorded sustained growth, recording an average growth of 6.2 percent per annum in GDP for almost half of a century. The changing economic structure also associated with the emergence of new technologies and globalization has made the Malaysian economy grow rapidly and has directly led to an increase in Malaysian incomes.

 

This report also focuses on aspect of people's well-being through the topic of public safety and the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on the environment. Also included are elements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in the context of 5P (People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership).

 

 

This report consists of ten main topics which are population and demography, labour force and salaries & wages, household income and poverty incidence, inflation, gross domestic product (GDP), trade, public safety, environment, tourism and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
