Annual Economic Statistics 2018: Mining of Petroleum and Natural Gas

INTRODUCTION

This publication presents statistics on the Mining of Petroleum and natural gas obtained from Annual Economic Survey 2018 for reference year 2017. Mining of petroleum and natural gas comprises Extraction of crude petroleum & natural gas and Support activities for petroleum & natural gas extraction. Principal statistics such as value of gross output, value of intermediate input, value added, number of persons engaged, salaries & wages paid and value of fixed assets are published in this report.

PERFORMANCE OF PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS MINING

The Annual Economic Survey 2018 for reference year 2017 findings showed that value of gross output grew by 7.3 per cent per year to RM138.6 billion as compared to RM120.4 billion in 2015. Value added also rose 7.8 per cent per annum from RM98.8 billion to RM114.8 billion for the same period. The number of persons engaged recorded 36,776 persons in 2017 as compared to 41,698 persons in 2015 with salaries & wages paid amounting to RM6.9 billion. 

GROSS OUTPUT VALUE OF PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS MINING BY GROUP

In the period of 2015 to 2017, the gross output value of Petroleum and natural gas mining increased with an average annual growth of 7.3 per cent. The Extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas group was the largest contributor with gross output value of RM125.8 billion (90.8%), while Support activities for petroleum and natural gas extraction group recorded RM12.8 billion (9.2%).

VALUE ADDED OF PETROLEUM AND NATURAL GAS MINING BY GROUP

The value added of the Petroleum and natural gas mining in 2017 registered RM114.8 billion with an annual average growth rate of 7.8 per cent. An Extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas group recorded the highest value added RM107.7 billion in 2017 as compared to RM92.3 billion in 2015. Meanwhile, the Support activities for petroleum and natural gas extraction group also posted value added of RM7.1 billion (2015: RM6.5 billion).

NUMBER OF PERSONS ENGAGED AND SALARIES & WAGES

In 2017, the number of persons engaged was recorded 36,776 persons with salaries & wages paid at RM6.9 billion. The Extraction of crude petroleum and natural gas group registered the highest number of employees of 18,630 persons with percentage contribution of 50.7 per cent (2015: 17,950 persons).  Meanwhile, the Support activities for petroleum and natural gas extraction group recorded 18,146 persons (49.3%).
