BAUXITE AND ILMENITE MINING CONTRIBUTED A GROSS OUTPUT VALUE OF RM1,773.1 MILLION COMPARED TO RM10.4 MILLION IN 2010 WITH A COMPOUND ANNUAL GROWTH RATE OF 179.6 PER CENT .

PERFORMANCE OF MINING AND QUARRYING SECTOR

This report presents statistics for the mining and quarrying sector for reference year 2015 based on the 2016 Economic Census. The mineral mining sub-sector refers to mining of  bauxite, gold, coal, iron ore, tin, ilmenit, amang retreatment and other mining. Whilst quarrying sub-sector refers to granite, limestone, sand extraction and other stone quarrying.

Overall, 869 establishments were involved in the mining and quarrying sector in 2015 as compared to 402 establishments in 2010. The value of gross output of this sector amounted to RM10,667.2 million with compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 18.9 per cent per year during 2010 to 2015. The total number of persons engaged in this sector also registered a growth of 16.1 per cent (40,656 persons) with salaries &  wages of RM1,209.8 million.

 

GROSS OUTPUT OF MINERAL MINING SUB-SECTOR

The value of gross output of the mineral mining sub-sector registered RM3,547.7 million in 2015 as compared to RM1,528.3 million in 2010 with CAGR of 18.3 per cent with six industries registering positive growth. Bauxite and ilmenite mining contributed a gross output value of RM1,773.1 million compared to RM10.4 million in 2010 with a CAGR of 179.6 per cent.

 

GROSS OUTPUT OF QUARRYING SUB-SECTOR

In 2015, the value of gross output of the quarrying sub-sector recorded a value of RM7,119.6 million with CAGR of 19.1 per cent per year during 2010 and 2015. The breaking and crushing of stone and gravel industry contributed a gross output value of RM2,386.5 million with a 33.5 per cent contribution. This was followed by quarrying, crushing and breaking of granite of RM1,960.9 million (27.5%) and sand extraction of RM846.9 million (11.9%).
