Volume Index of Services First Quarter 2021 *New

Volume Index of Services experienced a fall of 0.3 per cent and recorded 123.4 points in the first quarter of 2021 as compared to 123.8 points in the previous quarter.

The decline of the Services sector in the first quarter of 2021 was due to Others Services segment,  negative 9.5 per cent and Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment, negative 1.5 per cent. For year-on-year comparison, Volume Index of Services also recorded a decrease of 3.6 per cent  to 123.4 points as compared to the same quarter of previous year.

Seasonally adjusted volume index of this sector recorded a growth of 2.3 per cent to 123.7 points as compared to the previous quarter. Business Services and Finance segment were the major contributors with a growth of 5.3 per cent.

In the first quarter of 2021, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade rebounded for the first time after 3 consecutive quarters of negative growth due to COVID-19 to record 1.5 per cent year-on-year.

The Financial Services recorded a gross output value of RM138.0 billion in 2017

The financial services recorded a gross output value of RM138.0 billion in 2017 as compared to RM122.4 billion in 2015 with the annual growth rate of 6.2 per cent. In line with the rapid growth in gross output, the value of intermediate input increased by RM7.0 billion to record RM51.8 billion with the annual growth rate of 7.5 per cent. Thus, resulting a value added of RM86.2 billion for the year 2017.

The Administrative and Support Services recorded gross output value of RM33.4 billion in 2017

The administrative and support services recorded gross output value of RM33.4 billion in 2017 as compared to RM27.1 billion in 2015 with annual growth rate of 11.1 per cent. In line with the growth in the value of gross output, the value of intermediate input also increased by RM3.7 billion to record RM20.3 billion with an annual growth rate of 10.8 per cent, thus resulting a value added of RM13.1 billion for the year 2017. The number of persons engaged in this sector also reported an increase of 5.7 per cent to 194,008 persons as compared to 173,692 persons in 2015. Meanwhile, the salaries & wages paid in 2017 amounted to RM4.8 billion as compared to RM4.0 billion in 2015.

Food and Beverage Services recorded gross output value of RM82.8 billion in 2017

The food and beverage services recorded gross output value of RM82.8 billion in 2017 as compared to RM66.4 billion in 2015 with the annual growth rate value of 11.7 per cent. In line with the growth in the value of gross output, the value of intermediate input also increased by RM9.1 billion to record RM47.5 billion with the annual growth rate of 11.2 per cent, thus resulting a value added of RM35.2 billion for the year 2017. The number of persons engaged in this subsector also reported an increase of 3.7 per cent to 958,803 persons as compared to 891,616 persons in 2015. Meanwhile, the salaries & wages paid in 2017 amounted to RM12.2 billion as compared to RM9.7 billion in 2015.

The Real Estate Services Recorded Gross Output Value of RM32.8 billion in 2017

The real estate services recorded gross output value of RM32.8 billion in 2017 as compared to RM28.1 billion in 2015 with the annual growth rate value of 8.1 per cent per annum. In line with the growth in gross output, the value of intermediate input also increased by RM1.6 billion to record RM12.1 billion with the average annual growth rate of 7.2 per cent, thus resulting a value added of RM20.7 billion for the year 2017.

Personal Services and Other Activities recorded gross output value of RM9.0 billion in 2017

The Personal services and other activities recorded gross output value of  RM9.0 billion in 2017 compared to RM8.1 billion in 2015 with the annual growth rate of 5.8 per cent. In line with the growth in gross output, the value of intermediate input increased by RM0.5 billion to record RM4.7 billion with the annual growth rate of 5.5 per cent, Thus resulting a value added of RM4.4 billion for the year 2017.

The professional services recorded gross output value of RM45.1 billion in 2017

The professional services recorded gross output value of RM45.1 billion in 2017 compared to RM40.4 billion in 2015 with the annual growth rate value of 5.6 per cent per annum. In line with the rapid growth in gross output, the value of intermediate input also increased by RM1.6 billion to record RM17.7 billion with the average annual growth rate of 4.9 per cent, thus resulting a value added of RM27.4 billion for the year 2017.

Value added increased 10.3 per cent per year to RM166.0 billion in 2015 from RM101.8 billion in 2010. The number of employees in this industry rose by 4.4 per cent, 2.5 million persons as compared to 2.0 million persons in 2010.

Services sector recorded an annual income growth of 8.3 per cent in 2015

In 2015, number of establishments operated in the Services sector were  818,311 establishments. Income, value of gross output and value added generated by this sector were RM2,004.5 billion, RM964.7 billion and  RM518.3 billion respectively. This sector registered 4,795,721 number of persons engaged with salaries & wages paid amounting to  RM131.5 billion and value of fixed assets was recorded at RM904.4 billion.

The Number of Establishments Surged 27.5 Per Cent Per Annum (CAGR 2010-2015) for Information and Communications Services with a Value Added of RM62.6 billion

Based on Economic Cencus 2016, a number of 8,008  establishments was recorded with total value of gross output generated RM124.6 billion and value added of RM62.6 billion. Number of persons engaged in this services was 203,017 persons with salaries and wages paid amounting to RM11.7 billion. In terms of fixed assets value, this services registered RM82.8 billion for the reference year 2015.

Domestic Tourism Survey 2016

In 2016, a total of 189.3 million visitors was recorded with a growth of 7.0 per cent compared to 176.9 million in 2015. Meanwhile, number of trips increased by 8.0 per cent from 235.2 million trips in 2015 to 253.9 million trips in 2016.

Gross Output of Education Services Amounted to RM15.2 billion in 2015

In 2015, a total of 11,722 establishments operated in education services compared to  8,178 in 2010. Within this period, there was an increase of 3,544 establishments, registering a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.5 per cent.

Value of Gross Output of Arts, Entertainment and Recreation Services Recorded RM20.0 billion in 2015

The results of the census showed that there were 6,683 establishments operated in 2015. Total value of gross output generated was RM20.0 billion while the value added was RM8.6 billion. Number of persons engaged in this services were 57,975 persons with salaries and wages paid amounting to RM1.3 billion. Value of fixed assets for the reference year was RM6.4 billion.

Services Statistics on Transportation and Storage 2015

In 2014, transportation and storage services registered a gross output of RM85.8 billion, with the value added generated was RM37.2 billion. The number of persons engaged in these services totalled 286,637 persons with the salaries & wages paid amounted to RM10.2 billion. Meanwhile, the value of fixed assets was RM97.5 billion.

In 2014, the gross output recorded was RM10.7 billion and intermediate input amounted to RM3.7 billion. Thus, the value added generated was RM7.0 billion during the reference year. The total number of persons engaged in this services was 84,743 persons with salaries & wages paid of RM3.4 billion. Meanwhile, the value of fixed assets was RM11.3 billion.

In 2014, gross output registered by the private health services in 2014 was RM14.5 billion and intermediate input was RM7.5 billion. Thus, the value added generated was RM7.0 billion during the reference year. The number of persons engaged in this services was 95,644 persons with total salaries & wages paid amounted to RM3.0 billion. Meanwhile, the value of fixed assets owned in 2014 was RM7.5 billion.

In 2014, information and communication services recorded the gross output of RM98.8 billion. The value added generated was RM54.3 billion. While, the number of persons engaged was 144,435 persons with the total of salaries & wages paid recorded RM9.5 billion.

Sales value of goods and services for distributive trade sector in 2013 grew by 6.6% compared to 2008

In year 2013, there were a total of 370,725 establishments undertaking business activities in Malaysia and 260,664 or 70.3% of business establishments were in the retail trade sub-sector. Meanwhile, 15.4% or 57,050 establishments were engaged in wholesale trade activity and motor vehicles activity 14.3% or 53,011 establishments. 370,725 establishments operating in Malaysia generated sales value of goods and services of RM841.6 billion.

Domestic Tourism Survey, 2011 - Summary Findings

Domestic tourism in Malaysia in 2011 is mainly influenced by seasons (e.g. public and school holidays, festivals) and the organisation of large-scale events. On an average, 52.2 per cent of Malaysian residents aged 15 years and above made domestic tourism trips in 2011.
